Assessment and quantification of the anthropic impact on the posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow ArchiMer
Alami, Sami; Bonacorsi, Marina; Clabaut, Philippe; Jouet, Gwenael; Pergent-martini, Christine; Pergent, Gerard; Sterckeman, Aurore.
The regression of seagrass meadows has been extensively studied over the past few years. Although the causes of this regression may be locally natural, it is more generally related to human impact. In the framework of the HalGolo (2010) and CoralCorse (2013) oceanographic campaigns, acoustic data (mosaic of sonograms and bathymetry), validated by field data (Scuba diving, ROV), were acquired at depths of -10 m and -50 m at the NATURA 2000 site “Grand Herbier de la Plaine Orientale” (Western Mediterranean, Corsica). Processing of this data provided evidence of the scale of this mechanical degradation (trawling scars, mooring, etc.), and enabled its quantification with regard to surface area and scar density. The main degradation was observed between -20 and...

Evaluation de l’état de santé des habitats et peuplements de poissons de la zone de Voh-Koné-Pouembout, Campagnes de stations vidéo rotatives STAVIRO 2007-2013 ArchiMer
Giraud-carrier, Charlotte; Pelletier, Dominique.
• Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It aims at assessing the status and trends of habitats and mobile macrofauna in the Voh-Kone-Pouembout lagoon, in the light of demographic and industrial developments and accounting for the existing customary reserve of Oundjo. • It relies on 280 stations collected in 2007 and 2013 using the remote unbaited underwater video STAVIRO rotating technique, which were analysed to characterize habitat, fish assemblages, turtles and sea snakes, from a list of 490 species (AMBIO/A/1). • 143 species (including one turtle species and one sea snake species), belonging to 23 families were observed. The most frequent and abundant...

Impact of magnetic fields generated by AC/DC submarine power cables on the behavior of juvenile European lobster (Homarus gammarus) ArchiMer
Taormina, Bastien; Di Poi, Carole; Agnalt, Ann-lisbeth; Carlier, Antoine; Desroy, Nicolas; Escobar-lux, Rosa Helena; D’eu, Jean-françois; Freytet, Florian; Durif, Caroline M.f..
The number of submarine power cables using either direct or alternating current is expected to increase drastically in coming decades. Data concerning the impact of magnetic fields generated by these cables on marine invertebrates are scarce. In this context, the aim of this study was to explore the potential impact of anthropogenic static and time-varying magnetic fields on the behavior of recently settled juvenile European lobsters (Homarus gammarus) using two different behavioral assays. Day-light conditions were used to stimulate the sheltering behavior and facilitate the video tracking. We showed that juvenile lobsters did not exhibit any change of behavior when submitted to an artificial magnetic field gradient (maximum intensity of 200 µT) compared...

In situ growth of deep-sea octocorals after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ArchiMer
Girard, Fanny; Cruz, Rafaelina; Glickman, Orli; Harpster, Tyler; Fisher, Charles R..
Although the role of deep-sea corals in supporting biodiversity is well accepted, their ability to recover from anthropogenic impacts is still poorly understood. An important component of recovery is the capacity of corals to grow back after damage. Here we used data collected as part of an image-based long-term monitoring program that started in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to develop a non-destructive method to measure in situ growth rates of Paramuricea spp. corals and characterize the impact of the spill on growth. About 200 individual coral colonies were imaged every year between 2011 and 2017 at five sites (three that were impacted by the spill and two that were not). Images were then used to test different methods for measuring...

Long-term impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on deep-sea corals detected after seven years of monitoring ArchiMer
Girard, Fanny; Fisher, Charles R..
Cold-water corals form high biodiversity habitats in the deep sea. They are generally long-lived, slow-growing, and thus particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impact. We used high-definition imagery to quantify the impact and assess the recovery of deep-sea corals that were affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Over three hundred Paramuricea spp. colonies were imaged yearly between 2011 and 2017 at five sites, and the images were digitized to quantify health, hydroid overgrowth, identify branch loss, and track recovery patterns. Although the median level of impact decreased after 2011 at all impacted sites, it has been stable since then and remained higher than at the reference sites. Recovery depended on the initial...

Marine litter in submarine canyons of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Van Den Beld, Inge; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Menot, Lenaick; Bayle, Christophe; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Bourillet, Jean-francois.
Marine litter is a matter of increasing concern worldwide, from shallow seas to the open ocean and from beaches to the deep-seafloor. Indeed, the deep sea may be the ultimate repository of a large proportion of litter in the ocean. We used footage acquired with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and a towed camera to investigate the distribution and composition of litter in the submarine canyons of the Bay of Biscay. This bay contains many submarine canyons housing Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) such as scleractinian coral habitats. VMEs are considered to be important for fish and they increase the local biodiversity. The objectives of the study were to investigate and discuss: i) litter density, ii) the principal sources of litter, iii) the influence...

Meiofauna communities’ response to an anthropogenic pressure: The case study of green macroalgal bloom on sandy beach in Brittany ArchiMer
Baldrighi, Elisa; Grall, Jacques; Quillien, Nolwenn; Carriço, Rita; Verdon, Valentin; Zeppilli, Daniela.
Open sandy beaches support key ecological functions and a distinctive biodiversity, but are threatened by an increasing anthropogenic pressure. Among these threats is the occurrence of green tides of Ulva spp., expression of the eutrophication phenomenon. Our study aimed at determining the impact of green macroalgal accumulations on benthic meiofauna inhabiting two macrotidal sandy beaches of Brittany: Saint Nic (impacted) and Anse de Dinan (unimpacted). The presence of Ulva enhanced total meiofaunal abundance and nematode functional diversity when compared to a state free from macroalgal mats. The stranded Ulva supported high values of meiofaunal β-diversity as well. This unexpected response was likely due to the highly dynamic nature of open sandy...

Severe population decline of marsh deer, Blastocerus dichotomus (Cetartiodactyla: Cervidae), a threatened species, caused by flooding related to a hydroelectric power plant Rev. Bras. Zool.
Andriolo,Artur; Piovezan,Ubiratan; Costa,Mateus J.R. Paranhos da; Torres,Hermógenes A.; Vogliotti,Alexandre; Zerbini,Alexandre N.; Duarte,José M. B..
Balancing power production and environmental conservation can be problematic. The objective of this study was to investigate the abundance of marsh deer in the Paraná River Basin, above the Sergio Motta (Porto Primavera) Dam, before and after the impact of the dam closure. A fixed-wing, flat window aircraft was used to survey study transects. Observations were recorded based on the distance sampling line transect method, assuming that the detection probability decreases with increased distance. The abundance of marsh deer in the survey region prior to flooding was estimated to be 974 individuals (CV = 0.23). The overall abundance dropped from 974 to 444 (CV = 0.26) individuals after flooding, an overall reduction of 54%. This reduction can be attributed to...
